On April 27, 2014, Cheyne Johnston experienced a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Approximately 2.8 million people a year suffer a TBI in the US. In an instant, Cheyne’s life, as well as his family’s lives, was forever altered. He suffered what is known as a Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) which is global damage in the brain and which has a very low survival rate.
This life-changing experience revealed the immense challenges TBI survivors and their families face: fear, uncertainty, and navigating complex medical decisions. Cheyne’s journey inspired the creation of Cheyne’s Brain Foundation, a nonprofit ensuring no family faces TBI alone.
TBI affects the whole family. Our programs provide:
Practical tools and information for caregivers and survivors
Emotional support, peer networks, and advocacy
Expanding access to programs and resources
To bring comfort, clarity, and hope to families navigating TBI.
“I am now more than 12 years into this journey with Cheyne. As family members we embark on this journey of care and support without a map or clear path on which way to go or how to navigate. I hope to be a compass for you. While each brain injury is unique, there are commonalities and challenges that we learn about by sharing and reaching out to each other to find solutions. This is a creative and challenging journey. I am here to support you on your own unique journey of recovery and care in whatever way I can. Never give up hope.”
